Pulling the lower grille on a Coronado built-in — the condenser answers most of the question before a meter comes out

Coronado Island Sub-Zero Repair works one narrow strip of land and one class of equipment: built-in and integrated Sub-Zero refrigeration, from the older cottages in Coronado Village to the waterfront houses in the Cays and the newer kitchens at The Shores. Everything we carry has to cross the bridge or come up the Strand, which is why we ask what the appliance is actually doing before we set off. The van gets loaded for your symptom rather than for a general idea of one.

An island address changes which part fails first. Inland, built-in refrigeration is worn out by heat, and the calls arrive in waves during a hot spell. Here the temperature stays mild almost all year and the enemy is the air itself. Salt aerosol settles on condenser fins, spade terminals and fan-motor bearings and holds moisture against them long after the day has dried out. The marine layer keeps humidity up, so evaporators take on frost faster and the defrost circuit is asked to do more work on every cycle. Same appliance, different failure, different order of checks.

So that is the order we work in. The lower grille comes off before a meter comes out, because on this island the condenser explains the fault more often than anything else does. You get told what has failed, shown it where the unit allows, and given one price covering parts and labor before any work begins. We fit factory-approved parts, run the system through a full cycle afterwards to confirm it holds, and leave the kitchen the way we found it.

We are up in one of the towers at The Shores, so I left a name at the desk and gave them the floor when I booked. There was a rattle behind the grille on the refrigerator column that got worse every evening. Evaporator fan. In and out before lunch.

We only get down to the Cays a few months of the year and the ice machine out by the slip was making about half what it used to. He said the grille sits low enough to pull in salt and sand off the water. Cleaned out the condenser and it came right back.

The glass on the wine cabinet kept fogging and a couple of labels had started lifting. We keep the slider to the bay open most of the day so I suppose that is on us. He sorted the heater in the door and read the temperature at bottle level rather than off the panel.
